Entry 110

Once again, I'm seriously reconsidering my patronage to Proton AG services.

As much as I think Andy Yen is not a genuine fascist, the whole supporting Trump fiasco is big dent in the integrity of Proton services. It doesn't sit well with me.

The thing is, tho, my privacy threat model is not one that would make me vulnerable to the shortcomings of Proton Mail, so the only reason for me to stop using Proton services would be because of the CEO's apparent adjacency to fascism.

I've been using Proton VPN for bittorrent. Not using it would be a major disruption to my digital archiving endeavors.

Here are a few things I can do:

  • Cancel my Proton Plus subscription and put all my remaining credits into Proton VPN and Proton Pass. I can easily migrate my email to another service, as I use my own domain name, so doing that won't disrupt anything on that front. I have like two calendar events on Proton Calendar (lmao -- I'm a disabled loner and hermit, so my life is pretty uneventful). I don't really need Proton Drive -- it's not available natively on Linux anyway.
  • Completely cut Proton out of my life and beg them for a refund (as opposed to a credits transfer to Proton Pass and VPN). If I do this, then I would have to find an alternative to Proton VPN that allows P2P port forwarding. I can't think of any off the top of my head. I would also have to find an alternative to Proton Pass -- Bitwarden is the obvious choice for me. I used Bitwarden previously, so my vault is still intact on their servers. The tricky part would be migrating all the new information I added since I started using Proton Pass. Maybe a good spring cleaning of my password manager is in order, anyway, as there's a bunch of crap I don't use or is now obsolete.
  • Forget about all this and carry on as I was.

I put "moral contamination" as a tag for this entry, but I feel like it also boils down to my just-right OCD. Just-right OCD seems to be higher up the chain of neurosis and a lot of other things branch and flow from that. A rule of thumb I have is that if it causes decision paralysis, it most likely has something to do with my just-right OCD.
